Phase transition in monodisperse granular materials: How to model it by using a strain hardening visco‐elastic‐plastic constitutive relationship

چکیده
During heating (loading characterised by a progressive increase in strain rate) and cooling decrease numerical tests, performed using Discrete Element codes, granular materials experience phase transition phenomena, named this paper ‘dry liquefaction’ (when from solid the material starts behaving like fluid) resolidification’ (freezing, when fluid solid). The aim of consists reproducing phenomena hardening visco-elastic-plastic model based on critical state concept kinetic theories gases. authors demonstrate that crucial is role isotropic softening/hardening, which describes size elastic domain capability skeleton storing energy according to permanent force chains. main ingredients are: (i) additivity quasi-static collisional stresses, (ii) balance equation governing evolution temperature, interpreted latter as an additional internal variable for system contribution, (iii) mixed kinematic characterising incremental constitutive relationship. has been both calibrated validated Method (DEM) results, obtained testing dry assemblies monodisperse spheres under true triaxial loading conditions.

Multi-Mechanism Anisotropic Constitutive Model for Granular Materials
A microscopic framework for developing phenomenological constitutive models was recently developed for granular materials. The plastic strains are computed from relative sliding and rolling of particles, and the resulting microscopic theory is called the sliding-rolling theory. Within this framework, a phenomenological constitutive model was then developed to describe the anisotropic stress-str...
متن کاملConstitutive relations for cohesionless frictional granular materials
Based on the micro-mechanical model recently developed by Nemat-Nasser S. (J. Mech. Phys. Solids 48 (2000) 1541), a three-dimensional continuum mechanics model is presented for the deformation of granular materials which carry the applied load through frictional contacts. The model incorporates the anisotropy (or fabric) which develops as a frictional granular mass is deformed in shear, and inc...
متن کاملNon-uniform Hardening Constitutive Model for Compressible Orthotropic Materials with Application to Sandwich Plate Cores
A constitutive model for the elastic-plastic behavior of plastically compressible orthotropic materials is proposed based on an ellipsoidal yield surface with evolving ellipticity to accommodate non-uniform hardening or softening associated with stressing in different directions. The model incorporates rate-dependence arising from material rate-dependence and micro-inertial effects. The basic i...
متن کاملTransition to a labyrinthine phase in a driven granular medium.
Labyrinthine patterns arise in two-dimensional physical systems submitted to competing interactions, in fields ranging from solid-state physics to hydrodynamics. For systems of interacting particles, labyrinthine and stripe phases were studied in the context of colloidal particles confined into a monolayer, both numerically by means of Monte Carlo simulations and experimentally using superparam...
متن کاملPhase transition in a static granular system
We find that a column of glass beads exhibits a well-defined transition between two phases that differ in their resistance to shear. Pulses of fluidization are used to prepare static sedimented states with well-defined particle volume fractions φ in the range 0.57–0.63. The resistance to shear is determined by slowly inserting a rod into the column of beads. Force measurements and bed height me...
